Young Readers Book Group discusses The Great Greene Heist
Led by Greenlight receiving manager Grace, our young readers book group in Prospect Lefferts Gardens is geared toward kids ages 9 to 12, and reads great contemporary and classic chapter books. Parents are welcome (but not required) to attend, and pizza is served. For March, the group discusses The Great Greene Heist by Varian Johnson. Jackson Greene swears he's given up scheming. Then school bully Keith Sinclair announces he's running for Student Council president, against Jackson's former friend Gaby de la Cruz. Gaby wants Jackson to stay out of it -- but he knows Keith has "connections" to the principal, which could win him the presidency no matter the vote count. So Jackson assembles a crack team: Hashemi Larijani, tech genius. Victor Cho, bankroll. Megan Feldman, science goddess. Charlie de la Cruz, reporter. Together they devise a plan that will take down Keith, win Gaby's respect, and make sure the election is done right. If they can pull it off, it will be remembered as the school's greatest con ever -- one worthy

Story Time: Stephanie Graegin presents Little Fox in the Forest

Brooklyn artist Stephanie Graegin has illustrated many beloved picture books, including The Lost Gift, Water in the Park and Peace Is an Offering. Her authorial debut Little Fox in the Forest is an utterly enchanting wordless picture book in which two friends follow a young fox deep into the woods and discover a wondrous and magical world. Readers young and old will want to pore over the pages of this delightful fantasy adventure again and again! Reading Without Walls: A Conversation with Author Gene Luen Yang
The New York Public Library encourages Reading Without Walls! We are celebrating the launch of this initative with the National Ambassador for Young People's Literature, Gene Luen Yang. Join us for a conversation on Friday, March 31 at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building from 7 PM - 9 PM.

The Reading Without Walls Challenge celebrates the freedom to read and encourages readers to explore books about characters who look or live differently than you, topics you haven't discovered, or formats you haven't tried.

Gene Luen Yang is the National Ambassador for Young People's Literature. He began drawing comic books in the fifth grade, and in 1997 he received a Xeric Grant for his first comic, Gordon Yamamoto and the King of the Geeks. He has since written and drawn a number of titles, including Duncan's Kingdom, The Rosary Comic Book, Prime Baby and Animal Crackers. American Born Chinese, his first graphic novel from First Second, was a National Book Award finalist, as well as the winner of the Printz Award and an Eisner Award. He also won an Eisner for The Eternal Smile, a collaboration with Derek Kirk Kim. He is the author of the Secret Coders series (with artist Mike Holmes) and has written for the hit comics Avatar: The Last Airbender and Superman. Yang lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Fort Greene Young Readers Book Group discusses Raven in a Dove House

Led by Greenlight receiving manager Grace, our young readers book group in Fort Greene is geared toward kids ages 9 to 12, and reads great contemporary and classic chapter books. Parents are welcome (but not required) to attend, and pizza is served. For March, the group discusses Raven in a Dove House by Andrea Davis Pinkney. It's summer vacation, and twelve-year-old Nell has gone upstate to spend a month with Aunt Ursa and Cousin Foley. Seeing Foley's best friend, Slade, puts a smile on Nell's face, even when she tries to stay cool. Nell is enjoying the lazy days of summer, especially Foley's antics and Slade's flirty talk . . . until the boys surprise her with a frightening request. They want her to hide a pistol in her old dollhouse. Nell doesn't know what to do. Suddenly, she doesn't trust anyone, even herself. But when tragedy strikes, she knows she can't handle it on her own.

Kat Yeh is the author of The Truth About Twinkie Pie, The Friend Ship, You're Lovable to Me, and The Magic Brush. She will guide 9/10s students on creative writing during the first two weeks of April 2017. At the event, hear more about the legendary Dorothy Carter, the work taking place in the classroom, and the permanent endowment being created so that all Bank Street students will be able to benefit from the Writer-in-Residence experience. Dorothy's daughter, Carol Carter, will also be in attendance. Wine and cheese will be served.
Established in 2015, the Dorothy Carter Writer-in-Residence program invites a prominent author to work with School for Children
students to craft their writing each spring.

The Center for Children’s Literature and the Graduate School of the Bank Street College of Education are proud to announce a new program in Spanish:

Ciclo de Autores e Ilustradores Hispanoparlantes/ Spanish Speaking Authors and Illustrators Series

Conversations with Spanish-speaking children’s book authors and illustrators

Two time Pura Belpré winner, author/illustrator Angela Dominguez will speak in Spanish about her children's books at the Bank Street College Library on Friday, January 27th, 2017 from 5:00-6:30 pm. Dominguez is a native of Mexico City. She is the author and illustrator of numerous works including: Santiago Stays, Marta Big & Small, Knit Together, How Do You Say?/¿Cómo se Dice? and Let's Go Hugo.



After the event, guests will mingle over refreshments and purchase autographed copies of Angela's books through the Bank Street Bookstore.

Both native and non-native speakers are welcome to attend.You may be able to receive field work credit from your institution for attending this function.
